Silver Paints Replacing Metallizing at Hanes Erie

September 11, 2008 | Newsroom

One of the most difficult things to pull off in the decorating industry is to get a bright, shiny finish that looks like real silver or chrome. The most obvious way is to apply a metallized coating which deposits a thin film of aluminum to the substrate. This entails expensive machines that have chambers which can reach high vacuums and have electrical deposition between anodes and cathodes. The item to be metallized is spray coated to form a base coat which acts as an adhesion promoting layer. After drying it is placed into the chamber and a thin layer of the metal is applied. After metallizing a topcoat is applied to prevent scuffing and abrasion. All of this requires many steps including the drying ovens to dry the base coat and the top coat.
Obviously the metallizing process is complicated and reject levels are high due to dust, part imperfections, paint runs, and a host of other possibilites. Who wouldn’t want to find a better and cheaper way to get a bright silver finish?
At Hanes Erie we have finally found a way to get a bright silver finish to rival the metallized finish. It is a silver spray deposition applied to any substrate. It does, much like metallizing, require a topcoat to prevent scuffing but the brightness is similar to metallizing and can be tinted to look like gold or any desired shade of color. The obvious advantages are that it is less expensive, faster, has lower rejects and requires fewer labor steps.
This coating can replace almost any of the traditional metallized finishes that are typically used in the cosmetic container industry as well as any place where a bright finish is desired. Think of all the possibilities that exist for these applications. We are excited and eager to show the world our new Bright Silver Finish.
