Glass as Class at Hanes Erie

July 30, 2008 | Newsroom

Did you know that at Hanes Erie many different types of glass containers are processed every day for the cosmetic and alcohol beverage markets.
A big part of the business at Hanes is the application of sprayed-on coatings to enhance the appearance glass containers.

In one instance, they will spray a beautiful colored frost in a fade-out pattern to give the look of a soft dusting on the container. Then a screen printing of interlocking colors will be applied using Ultra Violet curing for durability and product resistance. This container would be typical for a cosmetic item.

In another variation, lovely pastel colors will be applied in a translucent spray finish. This would be used, for instance, on a candle glass where the customer wants only a soft, pleasing look. This container, when filled with the fragrant wax and gently burning like a votive, enhances the room atmosphere. With out the pastel spray finish, it would be a rather ordinary candle. This is where the added value really pays off for the supplier…beautiful candles sell better and demand a higher retail price.

In cosmetics, glossy, matte, colored and variations of every color imaginable are applied by the spray coating process every day to glass substrates. The cosmetic people recognize that a well decorated glass container is the draw, the bait that brings the buyer to the counter. The look is everything! Then, of course, what is inside has to be pleasing and desirable for a sale to take place. But without the great look and colors, the container is not going to be attractive to the buyer. Hanes Erie applies these great looks to many thousands of glass bottles, jars and candle glass on a daily basis.

Speaking of glass decoration, Hanes Erie can apply bright Gold and Silver hot stamping to virtually any glass substrate. Many times a customer will want their glass item to have an even more stand-out look than the coating or screen printing process can achieve. This method of decorating will give the container a bright, upscale look and support the presentation of a more costly cologne or perfume. It is a little more costly to produce but the results of this bright foil decoration are beautiful on a glass bottle or jar.

In the beverage bottle market Hanes produces spray coated and silk screened items for the wine, vodka and other alcoholic type of beverage. In one instance they apply a fade out frost to the top third of a tapered bottle, a blue translucent coating on the bottom and then screen print multiple colors to produce a stunning flavored vodka bottle. All of this on a high end vodka which sets the bottle off from the many competitors setting on the store shelves competing for sales. This added value type of deco on a glass alcoholic beverage bottle is where much of the industry is headed. If it doesn’t look good on the shelf, the retailers do not want to carry it.

Many small wineries are going the extra step to screen print glossy, vibrant colors onto their bottles in an effort to distinguish their product from other wine choices. The customer will usually look for a wine that they are familiar with and like, but the bottle decoration is a large determining factor in their ultimate choice. They want to buy the wine they like but it helps tremendously in the final sale if the bottle is decorated attractively. Hence the added value helps to sell the product, which is, albeit, slightly increased in price, but the added sales volume more than justifies the decoration.
